Music Educator Goals for 2020

Want to know what other music educators are planning to accomplish this year?

Thanks to so many responses on this Facebook group query I posed, here are some of what others are planning.

Which ones inspire you?

  • Be more organized with my lesson plans & assessments

  • Own more guitars

  • More travel

  • Be kind to myself. Finally.

  • Give more attention to the positive behaviors in my classes

  • Find a teaching position where I can thrive

  • Make beautiful music, and get as many kids involved as possible

  • Pass my SLLA

  • Improve assessments

  • Make more time for personal music making

  • Sing more

  • Uphold expectations, even though it’s hard

  • Make it to 2021!

  • Practice more

  • Survive

  • More self care

  • Say ‘NO’ more- not taking on extra things that aren’t necessary

“Saying no was on my list too! What I found works well and earned the respect of my office is putting the ball in their court. Example: my admin wanted me to give up my weekends once a month to conduct a rehearsal outside of my contract. Rather than say no, I said 'Interesting. Let me know when the supplemental contract is drafted and we can talk'. Never had to deal with it again.”

  • Learn a new instrument

  • Play the Bach Cello Suites on Bass Clarinet

  • Record and release an album

  • Keep my life in balance

  • Be present

  • Loose 80 pounds by August

  • Give more personal meaning to music



  • Happiness at home

  • Feed my family less take-out food

  • Don’t take work home

  • Graduating!

  • Release my new music video

  • Better classroom management

  • Not worry about what my colleagues think

  • Go to the gym at least twice per week


“To not let the marching band life consume me and my personal life. I feel like I lost myself this season and now that I'm on winter break, I'm not sure what to do with this time or what I like to do for fun anymore.”

  • Be asleep by 10 on weekdays

  • Write my own musical for my school

  • Enjoy every single day
